Sorry I’ve been MIA lately, I was away for a week and couldn’t post much. Moving swiftly on though in this post I’m going to cover eating out and travelling when you want to follow a low carb or keto lifestyle.
So there are 2 ways that I would usually approach either of these scenarios depending on how strict I want to be with myself. So as I mentioned in one of my earlier posts for the first 30 – 60 days of following a keto diet I would stick to it strictly. After this if you choose to you can introduce a day or two where you reintroduce carbs and sugar but only for these days! Personally I only do 1 day a week where I eat pretty much whatever I want but there are some people who will do 5 days following keto strictly and then have 2 days eating what they want.
The other way to approach being on holiday or eating out on keto is to really dig deep for some will power and only eat what you know you can!
What can I eat when I go to a restaurant?
So as I said the first 30 – 60 days of following a low carb or keto diet being strict will help you see faster results, but of course many people may have social occasions that they need to attend in that space of time. When I was in my first 30days of keto I had a couple of dinners that I had to attend as well as a trip away, (I really didn’t plan the time I started well haha) but I used to just order whatever protein I fancied and 9 times out of 10 your protein will usually come with either chips, potatoes or rice, so I used to just swap these for grilled veg, salad or whatever other veggie goodies they had. Yes it’s not ideal and you might feel a little boring when you look at your plate compared to others but at least you know you have chosen the safer option.
What should you look out for when you eat out?
If you can’t avoid going out in your first 30 – 60 days of starting keto just keep and eye out for a few things when you are ordering. There are 4 pretty simple things you can do when eating out on a low carb or keto diet:
Go Bunless: If you get a burger or sandwich ask for it to come without the bun or bread, sounds weird I know, but its really not that bad.
Skip Ketchup & BBQ Sauce: Whilst we all know both of these sauces a full of yummy goodness they are also full of sugar, so give them a miss sorry guys!
Opt For Diet Drinks: If you need something fizzy to have with your meal always go for a diet drink, this will cut out the sugar you would normally have if you had gone for the full fat version.
Go Green: This one I’ve already mentioned as its pretty simple but always swap the normal carbs that you would get with your meal for a salad or veggie mix.
These tips ideally work in a restaurant situation, fast food is a lot harder to navigate so I would just avoid it all together as it’s easier. Having said that in times of desperation I have been to McDonalds for a salad! I know I know please don’t judge me!! But it does go to show where there’s a will there’s a way!!
What about if I’m away on holiday?
So if your away on holiday you can take the exact same approach as if you go to a restaurant, you can either be really strict with yourself and stick to keto completely or you can take a week off and eat what you want.
Keto is pretty forgiving so if you do take a week off as long as you get straight back to following a keto diet your results won’t be affected much, I’ve known people go on holiday and eat what they want and come back lighter, don’t ask me how that works!! If you do choose to be a rebel and go off the rails once your holiday is over you need to get straight back on the horse. If you want a kick start you could even fast intermittently to get yourself back on track.
If you want to be really good and stick to keto whilst your away it’s possible of course, but it can be very difficult especially if you’re away with people who aren’t following keto! If you’re away and staying in a hotel you can just try your best to stick to how you would order in a restaurant, if you’re staying in a self catering resort like an Air B&B place they you can just treat this as if you were at home cooking.
Breakfast and dinner can be pretty easy because you’ll more than likely be at home for these meals, lunch however can be pretty difficult. If you have a set plan for each day and you are able to take a packed lunch and snacks I would highly recommend you do it, if not and you will more than likely be eating out a lot of the time just do you best to stick to a low carb or keto diet when your ordering each time. If you do slip up don’t beat yourself up, this can be a hard lifestyle to stick to so even if a couple of days yo don’t manage to stay on track please don’t feel disheartened! Just pick yourself back up and carry on starting fresh with each meal, I know its tempting to just think “Never mind I’ll start over tomorrow” but try not to as its way too easy to keep doing this and before you know it you aren’t following a low carb or keto lifestyle at all anymore. So just try and keep moving forward on your journey and don’t give up!!
